Pain

Pain

Pain can be caused by damage to a tissue from injury, overuse or incorrect use. It can be acute or chronic, locked in a joint or localized in a tendon, or even moving, in a seemingly random fashion, across a limb or the body as a whole.

Traditional Chinese Medicine looks at pain in different ways. Sometimes it is considered as a stagnation, in which case, we encourage it to move. At other times dryness or deficiency is the cause, in which case we seek to nourish it. At other times, still, pain is seen as a state of excess and heat and we try to reduce it. The management of pain very much depends on the individual case.

Pain is also seen as something that can be influenced by the external climate (cold, damp, heat) as well as the climate inside the body (stress, depression, heat). Lifestyle or dietary changes can often help in pain management.

Acupuncture can be helpful in addressing and relieving:

  • Migraine
  • Headaches
  • Sciatica
  • Back pain
  • Knee pain
  • Neck pain
  • Period pains

In treating pain conditions, distal points (near the hands and feet will be used) along with some needles close to the location of the pain.
