Traditionally, new Chinese mums were expected to rest in the house doing nothing other than being looked after for between 30 and 100 days. Pregnancy and childbirth were understood to be exhausting and women were given time to recover their strength before engaging in normal life again. In the West today, this is a rare luxury.
Postpartum support is recommended for all women who have given birth as acupuncture can help the body build back its reserves of qi and blood following childbirth. Tonification can begin as early as 3 days after delivery (but not before).
Acupuncture can also be used to specifically treat:
☯ Afterpains and abdominal cramping
☯ Breastfeeding problems
☯ Postnatal fatigue
☯ Postnatal anxiety and depression
